Time & Space - Space & Time Preface - Maja Chanculovska
Time and Space Died Yesterday.
Why should we go back?
Sonja Dimovska's graphic installation, entitled simply "Time and Space - Space and
Time", consists of twenty - one graphic prints, placed inside the space of three
vertical ribbons, which suggests a flow images similar to that of photographic film.
As a finger print base, made by the screenprinting technique, the Artist uses
plexiglass - an apparantly unusual graphic material. The transparancy of the
material and the special graphics placed in that manner causes visual sensations, all
of which function within are idea of self - analysis which Sonja uses to present her
opinion that "Neither Time or Space are real"; the only timeless and spaceless thing
is the person themself. The direction of movement in the reading of the work is a
spiral. Everything begins in the mirror - a space which limits, but offers depth. The
self - portrait as a print of a moment of sincerity ( "Truth" of time ), is a visual, or
even transparent, artistic sign which has its reference inside the viewer.
Self - portrait is an expression of the subjectivity of the Artist, it presents an
uncompromising analysis and fragmentation of the viewer; it is a beginning and an
end in one, at once. Although the observed figure slowly disappears from view, it
gradually reappears in the search for personality as a final definition of the eternal,
positive and negative circular movement of all. With the metafigural presentation in
a covert way, through rhetorical and realistic - seeming narrative presentation, the
Artist delivers temporal and special fluctual truth, placed in opposition to the
objective world.
